Your health deserves attention, too.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that taking care of yourself should never fall to the bottom of your to-do list.
Between work, family, pregnancy, and the many demands of everyday life, it can be easy to postpone your own healthcare appointments. But breast health is an important part of caring for yourself at every stage of life.
At OBGYNTEAM, we encourage women to make breast health a priority—not just in October, but throughout the year.
5 Ways to Make Breast Health a Priority
-
Schedule the screening you have been postponing.
If your mammogram is overdue, make this the month you arrange it. Screening recommendations depend on your age and individual risk, so ask your healthcare professional which schedule is appropriate for you.
   2. Know your family’s health history.
Has your mother, sister, daughter, or another close relative had breast cancer? Certain patterns of breast, ovarian, and related cancers may indicate an increased inherited risk. Sharing this information with your healthcare professional can help determine whether additional assessment is appropriate.
   3. Pay attention to changes in your breasts.
You know your body better than anyone. If you notice a new lump, nipple change, skin dimpling, or another persistent, unusual change, arrange a medical evaluation. Most breast changes are not cancer, but they should not be ignored—even if your last mammogram was normal.
   4. Make everyday choices that support your health.
Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol can help reduce breast cancer risk. No lifestyle choice can guarantee prevention, but small, consistent habits can contribute to better long-term health.
   5. Remember that breast health changes throughout your life.
Your needs may differ during your reproductive years, pregnancy, perimenopause, and after menopause. Hormonal changes and menopausal hormone therapy can raise questions about breast health, so discuss your individual circumstances with your healthcare professional.
Breast Cancer Awareness Is About More Than October
Breast cancer does not always run in families, and it does not always cause symptoms in its early stages. That is why awareness, appropriate screening, and timely medical attention matter.
You do not need to change everything overnight. Start with one step: schedule an overdue appointment, review your family history, or ask a question you have been putting off.
At OBGYNTEAM, we believe informed women are better equipped to take charge of their health. Whatever stage of life you are in, make time for yourself and the care you deserve.
