The best time to prepare for pregnancy is before it begins.
What Is Pre-Family Planning?
Pre-family planning, also known as preconception counseling, is a medical visit designed to help you prepare for a future pregnancy. It allows your OB-GYN to identify potential concerns, review your health, and recommend appropriate steps before you begin trying to conceive.
Whether you are planning pregnancy soon or simply exploring your options, a pregnancy planning OB-GYN consultation can help you understand your next steps.
Who Can Benefit from Preconception Counseling?
A pre-family planning visit may be helpful if you:
- Are planning your first pregnancy or another child.
- Take medications that may need review before pregnancy.
- Have experienced miscarriage, preeclampsia, preterm delivery, or other pregnancy complications.
- Have concerns about your age, family history, or inherited conditions.
- Have irregular periods, PCOS, endometriosis, or concerns about fertility.
- Have diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, or another medical condition.
- Have had a previous cesarean delivery or complicated pregnancy.
- Want guidance on prenatal vitamins, nutrition, and preparing for a healthy pregnancy.
What Happens During Your Visit?
Your consultation is tailored to your medical history and individual goals. Depending on your needs, your visit may include:
01
Medical and reproductive history:
Reviewing your menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies, surgeries, and existing medical conditions.
02
Medication and vitamin review:
Discussing prescription medications, supplements, and prenatal vitamins to determine whether any changes are needed before pregnancy.
03
Fertility and reproductive health:
Discussing ovulation, irregular periods, and whether fertility testing or additional evaluation may be appropriate.
04
Pregnancy readiness:
Reviewing nutrition, folic acid, immunizations, genetic screening options, and relevant preventive tests.
05
Planning for a future pregnancy:
Identifying potential risks, discussing previous pregnancy complications, and creating a personalized plan for your next steps.
Not every patient needs the same tests or recommendations. Our goal is to focus on what is appropriate for your health and circumstances.
Planning Pregnancy After a Complicated Pregnancy
If you have experienced a difficult pregnancy, it is understandable to have concerns about what may happen next. Planning ahead gives you an opportunity to discuss your history and prepare before becoming pregnant again.
Depending on your circumstances, we may review previous pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, or other complications that could affect a future pregnancy.
Understanding your history can help guide recommendations for monitoring, treatment, or specialist consultation when needed. Although no approach can eliminate every pregnancy risk, preparation can help identify concerns early and support informed decisions.
When Should You Schedule a Visit?
Ideally, schedule your preconception consultation before you start trying to conceive. This allows time to review your health and address any concerns before pregnancy.
For most people planning pregnancy, taking a prenatal vitamin containing at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily is recommended beginning at least one month before conception. Your clinician can advise whether you need a different dose based on your medical history.
If you have irregular periods, known fertility concerns, or have been trying to conceive without success, you may benefit from an earlier evaluation. Fertility evaluation is generally recommended after 12 months of trying for women younger than 35 and after 6 months for women 35 and older. Earlier evaluation may be appropriate depending on your circumstances.
